"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle; easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we would still live no other way."
We brought home our puppy today, and as happy as I am, it has of course brought memories of Scout to the surface. This quote is so representative of how I feel about dogs and their role in our lives. What special animals they are, the way they wrap themselves around our hearts and become part of our families. They slowly and subtly intertwine themselves in our lives to the point where we cannot remember what it was like before they arrived.
My grief for the loss of Scout is still there, but like Irving Townsend, I would have it no other way. I can no longer live a life without a dog, and so, our family takes a deep breath and jumps in the water. We know someday that grief will come again, but it will have been worth it to share our lives with him. And we will hope and pray that it comes a little less soon next time.....
