Oscars Red Carpet Review 2016

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am very into the Oscars. My husband refers to it as "Mommy's Super Bowl," which I would say is fairly accurate. I literally look forward to it all year. I love everything about it; the speeches, the excitement, the honorary awards, and of course, the fashion. The "pre-show" is one of my favorite parts of the night! And this year I was pretty excited to see Chris Rock host. How did all of you think he did? And did you enjoy the show this year? I thought he did a fairly good job, and I must admit, his opening monologue was pretty scathingly funny. But I didn't think the show was very good over all this year. I really miss it when they don't do an honorary achievement award. I love that it usually involves a tribute to a beloved star and that we get to see clips from classic films. I'm such a film buff, so that is something I really enjoy. And I thought it went on waaay too long! And didn't you feel like there was a lack of star wattage? Like where was everyone?! I could've used a few George Clooneys, Angelina Jolies, Brad Pitts, or how about some older, glamorous stars? It was pretty lacking. However, I did love the movies this year (I thought it was an especially good year!) and Spotlight, which won best picture, was one of my favorites. But enough about all those details... how were the dresses???? I must admit that here too, I was a little disappointed. A few people looked good, and no one looked terrible, but there just weren't a lot of drop dead gorgeous dresses. Here were a few of my favorites, in no particular order.

Olivia Munn in Stella McCartney (I would say if I had to pick a favorite of the night, this was it. Love the beautiful simplicity of this - and that color!)

Cate Blanchette in Armani Prive (I wasn't sure I actually liked this dress when I first saw it. However, when she was being interviewed and I could see it up close, I have to say that it was stunning on her. Not sure anyone else could've carried it off though).

Lady Gaga in a dress/jumpsuit creation by her stylist (I loved this on her!)

Kelly Ripa in Dennis Basso

Julianne Moore in Chanel

Charlize Theron in Dior (she's always stunning!)

Another interesting thing on Oscar night, is that many, if not most, of the stars change into yet another beautiful gown before going to the after parties. Funny enough, some of their choices I liked better than the dresses they wore to the ceremony! Here are two I thought looked amazing.....

Elizabeth Banks in Ralph and Russo (Love this!!)
Jennifer Lawrence in Alexander Wang (I actually liked this much more than the Dior lace dress she wore to the show!)

Well, I'm definitely hoping for a better show next year! Bring on the old glamorous movie stars! And better dresses.... please!!

  2. Sheila, First I am cracking up because my husband says the exact same thing about the Oscars! They even get me takeout and make a big deal about it being my time. Lol. I couldn't agree more about the show- a total yawn. Something was missing and I think you were right it was the stars.. and no special achievements or anything. As far as the dresses, I think the prettiest was Elizabeth Banks! She may not have even been at the show, but the rest were good, but nothing so amazing. I think we agreed on most. I did love Olivia Munn's so much as well! Great post! Kim

  3. I was disappointed overall. I knew Chris Rock would have to mention the issue at hand, but I felt the show became more about complaints (and not just from Chris) and the awards night was bypassed. I like Chris Rock but didn't find the evening particularly entertaining. Mad Max winning so many awards was a total surprise to me and I hadn't seen that movie so I was a little disappointed that some of the 'favorites' didn't win. There's always next year. :-)
